What is Concrete X-Ray and How Does It Work? By definition, concrete x-ray is a process that uses x-rays in order to come up with an image of the interior of a concrete without actually breaking it, the purpose of which is to identify and figure out what’s inside it, including embedded objects such as conduit, rebar, and post tension cables. In many of the instances, the x-ray source is an isotope, either cobalt-60 or iridium-192, but there also are times when the x-rays are generated using an x-ray tube. There also is a need for a detector, which in this case is either film or digital detector panel. While there can be multiple uses for concrete x-ray, the objective is literally the same, which is to reveal or learn what the contents of a concrete target is, but without the need to move, remove, or destroy it. The most common targets include that of concrete walls and/or suspended slabs, which in turn are going to be subjected to retrofitting or renovation. In majority of instances, those walls or slabs are part of a larger structure or unit.

In reality, concrete x-ray is quite a revolutionary method because in the past, there was no other way to figure out what’s inside the concrete target than to cut through it. When it comes to cutting through rebar, there’s a possibility that the structure will be weakened, although there are so many times that it can be done due to certain structural tolerance. But cutting through post tension cables is a whole lot different because it could lead to a structural disaster. The fact is it is no longer being utilized or performed in today’s construction setting. Also, cutting through conduit isn’t recommended as well because accidentally cutting it could result to safety issues, not to mention costly repairs.

Today, concrete x-ray is preferred by structural engineers because it is the most effective way of figuring out if there are any hidden objects, more particularly dangers and hazards before any cutting procedure is done for a specific project. Even though some people believe that ground penetrating radar is the more practical and safer approach, the fact remains that concrete x-ray is still the one that produces more accurate and clearer images of the interior contents of a concrete target. Also, engineers love working with x-rays since they’re easier to translate or interpret. It can’t be denied that concrete x-ray is a little bit more expensive to avail compared to ground penetrating radar, but the thing is the difference wouldn’t be that big in actual field application.
